Club Ltd chairman Bob Langham has confirmed that synthetic carpet will be laid on 3 & 4 greens before next December and will have lights .

Pennants will start on 1/03/08…
Port City still does not have confirmation on the number of sides/grades that the District will allow us to have….This has gone on for 6 weeks now without a firm answer and now has gone to the Royal for approval . Indications at this stage are that we will be told what we can have and our submissions to the district to date could be overruled .

Umpire’s News :

The old 21 metre jack length is back in ….and also winner of the previous end retains the mat ..

The “ For Sale “ sheet is working well , so if you have unwanted bowls equipment or clothes etc write your ad on a coaster and put it in the secretaries pidgeon hole to be printed

How Time Flies

Jim Whitbourne and I discovered we had something in common having both played bowls at Beamaris Bowls Club, a bayside suburb of Melbourne. Beaumaris was one of the first clubs to host the "Jack High Bowls" competition early in the '80s.

Jim brought in a copy of the 1986 "Bowls in Victoria" magazine for my interest and it included a picture of Jim when he played at Dendy Park. I saw Jim playing social bowls the other day and he still showed the "apprehension" and enthusiasm from over 20 year ago.

Keep it up Jim and may you continue to enjoy your bowls!

Men's Major Fours Final

Frank Smith putting one down

Jim Cranna, Keith Hall & Bob Counsell (L to R)

John Rossiter on the mat & Chris Stone

The first Port City Men's final for 2008 was played this morning with the team of John Rossiter, Kevin Bramble, Keith Hall & Frank Smith (skip) taking out the major fours title 21 - 12 with Chris Stone, Bob Counsell, Jim Cranna & Geoff Ball (skip) the runners up.

Played under ideal conditions with a light breeze and the green running at approximately 16 1/2 seconds Frank and his team took an early lead of 10 - 5 after 10 ends. They held the lead throughout the game with Geoff and his team threatening at times but couldn't hold onto shots - they would build a head with 3 or 4 shots only to have Frank save the end with his last bowl.

The spectators enjoyed the contest with some great bowls played by all during the game.

District Final - Senior Singles

Keith Martin, Westport

Ian Binder, Port City

The District final of the State Senior Singles was played this morning at Westport under ideal conditions and free running greens. Finalists Ian Binder, Port City and Keith Martin, Westport each had the lead at times but Keith broke away in the middle ends and Ian was unable to catch up after being down 26 - 12 as shown in one of the above pictures. Ian came back but the game went to Keith with a 31 - 20 final score.

The spectators enjoyed some excellent bowls from both players and we wish Keith all the best when he next plays for the Zone championship.
