Zone 14 Pennant Finals

Nice form Bernie!
Bernie Biddle - Port City

Col Pritchard - Park Beach

The Zone 14 Pennant finals were played today at South West Rocks and Urunga. The above photos are from South West Rocks and the games were played under ideal conditions with an excellent turnout of spectators.

The Port City Grade 2 team kept Park Beach honest but ending up going down 60 - 51. Park Beach maintained their lead during most of the game but Port City never let them break away early to a winning margin. Well done to both sides for an excellent display of competitive bowls.

In the prestigous Grade 1 we saw two regular rivals, Westport and Park Beach, in a see-saw battle with Westport taking out this grade 61 - 60. During the match one side would start to build up a lead and appear to be breaking away only to see the other side come back and reverse the lead.

Total results for all grades were as follows:

Grade 1: Westport def. Park Beach 61 - 60

Grade 2: Park Beach def. Port City 60 - 51

Grade 3: Wauchope def. Scotts Head 68 - 53

Grade 4: Urunga def. Kempsey Heights 69 - 47

Grade 5: Coffs Ex Services def. Wauchope 72 - 46

Grade 6: South West Rocks def Coffs Ex Services 63 - 49

Grade 7: West Coffs def. Kempsey RSL 61 - 60

New 'skorts' for lady bowlers

new skorts for ladies Kelsey Cottrell models new skort

The following is a release from Bowls Australia regarding the women's dress standards that I thought you may find of interest

I noted a release on the club's notice board regarding dress standards for the men's Zone pennant finals that indicated that shorts may be worn at the zone finals but not at the state finals later in the year.! Perhaps they have seen me in shorts and do not feel it is appropriate!

Bowls Australia release:

"Keegan 'skorts' her way to victory

Thursday 22 May 2008

World Championship gold medalist Julie Keegan has claimed yet another major title, despite ruffling a few feathers along the way.

Earlier this week, the Australian star joined forces with national teammates Kelsey Cottrell and Lynsey Armitage, as well as Helensvale ace Brenda Thompson to claim the Queensland state fours’ title, but has since been the focus of a storm in a teacup.

While partnering Armitage in the pairs’ competition, Keegan, who is an established member of the Australian squad, was confronted by officials regarding the attire she was wearing while on the green.

Despite meeting national regulations which have been adopted by Bowls Queensland, the 2006 Australian Open winner was told her skort was too revealing and that she should change in to something that was more appropriate.

The skort in question, which was modeled by Keegan and Cottrell during February’s Australian Open, is a sanctioned garment under Bowls Australia’s national dress regulations and features prominently in its Women In Sport range.

Upon hearing the news, Bowls Queensland swiftly dealt with the matter, giving Keegan the green light to continue wearing the skort, which has been raising eyebrows since it was first introduced.

“They basically told me that it was too revealing and that I should get changed, despite the fact it has a Bowls Australia logo on it and it is approved (by Bowls Australia and Bowls Queensland),” Keegan said.

Bowls Australia’s Women In Sport program, which is now in its second year, was developed more than 18 months ago in an attempt to arrest the declining participation rates amongst females in the game.

“In essence, the Women In Sport range was established to curb one of the biggest factors preventing females from taking up bowls and that was the strict dress regulations,” Bowls Australia chief executive officer Neil Dalrymple said.

“From the workshops we have conducted, not to mention the feedback we have received, the evidence strongly suggests that females are unlikely to take up the game due to this point.

“As a result, the Women In Sport range was developed to create more fashionable and appealing attire to be worn during games.

”Despite the hiccup, Keegan and Armitage have advanced into tomorrow’s (22/5) quarter-finals of the pairs’ competition where they will meet Lyn Cuthbertson and Carmen Anderson."

Monday 26th May:

Monthly Newsletter, WBC - April

Port Macquarie City Women's Bowling Club - Newsletter April 2008

Many thanks to Robyn Biddle, Publicity, for providing this newsletter for posting.

The newsletter is a little late this month as I was in Coffs Harbour at the group Pennant play off’s and was holding it back so I could give the results.

Congratulations must go to our No: 3 Pennant Team on their results at Coffs Harbour last week. The way in which the girls presented themselves both in playing and sportsmanship was excellent. They bowled really well and were unlucky to be playing a very strong team from Park Beach.

On Monday in the am they played Lismore City and went down by three shots The pm game they won def Grafton 44-30. Tuesday am they won def Forster 57-27.Pm they won def Pottsville 42-37. Wednesday am they def South West Rocks 51-26.
In the pm they lost to Park Beach 28-48. Park Beach will now go through to the State, they did not lose a game.

We had a bye on Thursday morning so we walked to the mall. While there we were stopped by shoppers and asked what sport we were playing as they thought our uniforms were great. We would like to thank Graham Connell for driving us up to Coffs and then coming back to bring us home. We showed our appreciation with a bottle of scotch.

Our Club singles is in progress and the match committee is working hard to catch up with all the washed out games. The final will be played on Thursday.

Our Veterans enjoyed their day at Lake Cathie. Although rained and there was no bowls, the ladies all played trivia and enjoyed a lovely lunch.

Saturday Social Bowls will now be in the morning as the result of the voting in April.

Our AGM is on the 28th July, and we are hoping for lots of nominations for the committee. Some of our members are not aware of the different duties that go with the positions, so this is just a short list.

President: Her job is to run the Club. Attend District & Mixed Meetings. She is the chairperson of all meetings. She has all the power and privileges due. The president shall ex-officio a member of all committees.

Vice Presidents: Will represent our President at any time the president is away. They will attend meetings on her behalf.

Secretary: Keeps accurate minutes of all meetings of the Club. She shall notify members of the notice board for matters necessary and is responsible for new members with their clearances from other Clubs. No doubt the Secretary has a big job.

Treasurer: Is as it sounds. She is in charge of the finances, banking and keeping a full account of the money and give reports at quarterly meetings

Selection: They do the cards for our social days and special days. They are responsible for the selection of the pennant teams.

Match: They arrange Club championships, carnivals, attend to pennant cards and supervise the draw for rinks.

Social: To arrange the lunches for any Club function

Committee: The committee ladies are in charge of the duties such as dinning room.
(setting and clearing of the tables on our special days and getting helpers.) Raffles buying and selling them.

Welfare: Keeping in touch with members that are ill and visiting them at home or in hospital. There are duties such as carnivals, meals on wheels and lockers.

Shirts & jackets, assistant to the secretary and assistant to the treasurer.

Publicity: Placing our news in the local paper each week, news to the radio station each week, taking our Club photos and doing our newsletter each month.

Without the committee people, your Club would not be able to function and as we have a lot of very capable members we would like to see you all think hard about nominating for a position.
Notes:
We wish Irene Treeweeks a speedy recovery after her hip replacement. Barbara Barrett is not in the best of health and we wish her well.
We say goodbye to Patricia Abe who is going to live in the North West and we wish her all the very best.
Congratulations to Pamela Ditchfield who tells me she has been made a Life Member of City Tattersal’s and was presented with a lovely medal.

Now for a little fun…….
A hungry lion was scouring the jungle looking for food, when he came to a small hut in a clearing, where he saw two men, one sitting on a rock reading a book, and the other sitting at a small table writing a letter. Without a moments hesitation the lion pounced on the man reading a book, ate him……….because even lions know that readers digest and writers cramp…………

Grade 5: Wauchope went into the final round with an unbeatable score of 43.5 and have taken out this grade. Final results may even increase their lead.

Grade 6 / 1: Results for Comboyne were not available but their 35.5 progressive score gives them the section.

Grade 6 / 2: South West Rocks have taken out this section and now go into the post sectional playoff against Comboyne.

Grade 7 / 1: Kew came home with a strong 41.5 points for the year and have taken out this section.
