Port Macquarie City Women's Bowling Club - Newsletter May 2008

Many thanks to Robyn Biddle, Publicity, for providing this newsletter for posting to the Bowls News website.

We thank Shirley Devine for all the work she did getting all the teams and the match and umpires for all their work. The dining room had a real carnival atmosphere; tables were decorated with balloons, which were made by Norma.

On Tuesday we had our Charity Day for the Oncology Unit at the Port Macquarie Base Hospital.

Congratulation to Barbara Barrett and Husband on their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Congratulations also to Barbara on her award she has received for her work at the Koala Hospital. Well done Barb.

To any of our members that are not in the best of health at present we wish you a speedy recovery and hope to see you back at the Club soon.

Now for a little fun…….

Father Murphy walked into a pub in Donegal, and says to the first man he meets, “ do you want to go to heaven?”

The man said “yes I do Father.”

The Priest said, “then stand over there against the wall”

Then the Priest asked the second man “do you want to go to heaven?”

“Certainly, Father,” “then stand against the wall” the Father said.

Then Father Murphy walked up to O’Toole and said “ do you want to go to heaven?”

O’Toole said “no I don’t Father.”

The Priest said “I don’t believe this. “You mean to tell me that when you die you don’t want to go to heaven.”

O’Toole said, “OH when I die, Yes. I thought you were getting a group together to go right now.”

Port City Men's Singles

Nice form David

David Gabb putting one down

Minor Singles Champion

Paul Brady in great form

Great head on a windy day!

Who has the shot?

Great viewing from the bowlers lounge

Some of the spectators keeping warm inside

The Major and Minor Men's Singles were played today at Port City under cold and blustery conditions with David Gabb taking out the major singles title and Paul Brady the minor singles.

In the major singles Graeme Light led throughout most of the match but David wasn't far behind at any time. David levelled the score at 27 all then went on to take the title 31 - 28. Both players had some excellent bowls considering the gusty windy conditions.

The minor singles saw Paul Brady pull ahead early in the match and maintained the lead throughout to take out the trophy 31 - 17. Chris Thornton reduced the lead but Paul was just too far ahead to catch on the day.

Well done to all players for the entertaining matches and for reaching the finals. It was great to see both singles matches carded for same day and I'm sure we would have had a bigger spectator crowd if the weather had been fine. A good crowd was inside enjoying the match and keeping warm!

Additional photos are available including a few from a triples championship match played this morning - click here for the photo album.

The final of the Men's Major Singles and the Minor Singles will be played tomorrow morning (Sunday 15th June) commencing at 9:00 am at Port City.

The Major Singles will see David Gabb up against Graeme "Mr Smooth" Light and should be a great match with two worthy opponents.

In the Minor Singles Paul Brady defeated Paul Barry today in the semi-final 31 - 16 to take his place in the final against Chris Thornton. This should prove to be an excellent display of bowls for the title.

We look forward to seeing a large spectator crowd for these two prestigous events tomorrow that should provide some entertaining and competitive bowls.

More news on the new white bowls

no shades of grey here

The following is a release from Bowls Australia regarding the new white bowls.

"The votes are in

Wednesday 4 June 2008

World Bowls’ recent decision to ratify the use of white bowls continues to divide the Australian playing public.

During a month long poll on the Bowls Australia website, almost 60 per cent of respondents said they would not use the new colour, while just over 40 per cent gave it the thumbs up after almost 500 votes were submitted.

In a changing of the guard, Taylor Bowls’ first shipment of the white variety will hit Australian shelves in the coming weeks, with managing director Grant Heron confirming that demand has been through the roof.

“We have been inundated with requests for them from all over the world, and white bowls are most definitely in our plans for the future,” Mr Heron said.

“However because of demands on our current colours our production is currently stretched to full capacity.

“We have to fulfil an already overflowing order book before we can contemplate introducing another new colour but we have been very impressed with the response, particularly from the Bowls Australia survey.”

With white bowls now a reality, the game’s governing body insists it would prefer competitors to use coloured rings when playing with them. "

Your scribe "Smitty" will buy a beer for the first one on Port City greens with the new bowls!

Any comments or an additional prize for the first with the white bowls?
